Flash #19 2004

In this Flash:

  • Dragon Boat Races
  • Super Prison
  • Hairy Down-Wind Runs
  • Another Leaving Party

Next Tuesday, 22nd June, we all get a day off work to go Dragon Boating! Our team, The LBC Hull Raisers, will be taking part so make sure you come down and support, or better still, take part. We’ve had quite a few people sign up for the team, and I’m expecting you all to live up to that promise! There is still room for a few more to join in on the day – full training will be given on the way to the starting line. This is an event that is far more interesting if you are taking part in rather than just watching. Our base camp will be near the beach path, to the left of the stage as you look at the sea. Gather at 7:45 (am!) for the first race.

You may have seen that the media is picking up more and more on the issue of the Government wanting to build a Super Prison on reclaimed land around Hei Ling Chau and a bridge from there to Mui Wo. The plan has been reduced a little, and no longer seems to include reclaiming between Hei Ling Chau and Sunshine Island, but will still involve many years of disruption and destruction to our sailing area, with a brightly lit fortress visible from most of South Lantau as the final goal.

Not In My Back Yard is perhaps the most selfish of reasons to get involved in a campaign against a project like this, but hopefully it is enough to make a lot of people look further in to the matter and think about the more altruistic reasons for this construction being a poor idea. The Living Islands Movement (www.livingislands.org.hk ) is co-ordinating a campaign to preserve the natural beauty of South Lantau. They have a meeting this Saturday, 19th June in the Silvermine Hotel, Mui Wo, 11:15am. : take the 10:45 ferry from Nim Shue Wan, or better yet, sail over and make a day of it. Contact Eric Spain (ericjs@netvigator.com) to offer your support.

The DB Yacht Club are also planning a parade of boats around the island to demonstrate their opposition – I’ll pass on details as they firm up.

There’s no racing planned for this weekend, so expect some decent wind. Last weekend had great weather : a couple of boats got to Cheung Sha in 1 hour 45 minutes, which is pretty good going. A few others had a great blast round Peng Chau with some hairy down-wind runs. So get out there and enjoy it while you can!

If you do go out there, beware of the dragon boat race lane markers in the bay – those flags are all roped together, so try to cross the line midway between flags, and lift your rudders smartly if you think your are going to snag them.

The calendars for the second half of 2004 are in the post. If for some reason you don’t receive yours you will be able to pick one up from me on the beach next Tuesday, 7:45 – 8:00am only.

There’s a committee meeting tonight (17 June 2004), 7:30 in the DB Resident’s Club. Everyone is welcome to come and share their views on how the club is going and to get involved in making good stuff happen.

There’s another leaving party coming up and once again, THIS IS NOT MINE. I’m staying. I’m just passing on the information. Lucy Vowles is leaving us to try life in gay Paris, and will be saying goodbye at DiVino wine bar (73 Wyndham Street, Central) on Saturday 10th July, 7.30pm, then on to the Feather Boa, 38 Staunton St. Free drink if you come dressed as a Frenchman.

Cheers,
