- Safety course
Last Sunday’s first three races of the Typhoon series were
held in light winds and calm sea conditions. In the first race Tom
Nunan and James Harris had a good battle for two thirds of the race
before James’ tiller extension broke, forcing him back to
the beach. There was an exciting moment at the end of the sausage
leg when we sailed four abreast to the C mark. I was on the inside,
and if you didn’t fully understand my hurried and shouted
explanation of the “Room at the mark” rule, let me refer
you to item 13 here
!
In the second race Jeremy and Jollie Blackwell came out to give
Tom a bit of competition in a failing breeze. I tried a port tack
start, which had worked wonderfully the previous week, but it didn’t
help this time.
For the last race James came back with a replacement tiller and
two replacement crew, Jeremy handed the tiller to Jollie and Tom
let Michele drive. The result was the same though, with Trouble
n Strife taking line honours. When you look at the results though,
here.
take a look at Sidney Leung’s times. It was his first time
sailing solo and although it took him one race to get used to it,
he was right up there in the next two. One to watch. Henrik and
Marianne Kolding have also clearly been practicing during their
summer holidays.
But at the end of the day, congratulations to Tom and Michele for
a perfect start to the series.

Leg B of the Saturday Series is this Saturday, 7th August, with
an 11:00am skippers briefing. Only 4 boats took part last time,
so let’s see if we can get more out this week. The weather
is looking mighty good : sunny and force 3-4

The logs of the web site show that there is a lot of interest in
the Clerical Medical Open Asia Regatta (www.lantauboatclub.com/regatta),
just 65 days to go! The online registrations are starting to come
in, so if you haven’t already, log on and fill in your details.
Don’t forget to pay though : by cheque or online banking,
details on the page. There is an early bird discount if your money
hits the LBC bank account by the end of August – it’s
not enough just to register, we need your $ to qualify.
This year we will also be doing all we can to get as many of our
boats over to the Hobie Asian Classic on 22-24 Oct. More details
on that, plus how to enter, later.

End of Summer Family Barbecue and Sail
On Sunday, August 29, we will be organizing another family barbecue
and sail, this time to the Treasure Island resort opened recently
on Pui O beach. Take a look at the web site to get a glimpse of
the facilities available there: click here
. We’ll have a friendly beach-to-beach race and there will
be a kaido to take non-sailors from Discovery Bay directly to the
Pui O beach. If you would like to reserve space on the kaido, please
send an email to here
letting us know how many people (adults or children) you will bring.
More details as we get closer, but the sooner we get an idea of
numbers, the better.

For those of us who would like to be a bit more adventurous in
their sailing there is a course being run by the HK Yachting Association
at the RHKYC that might be of interest.
Safety & Survival at Sea : click here.
Essential for anyone going too far from home, and worth knowing
even if you stay within sight of Awah your whole time on the water.
So, see you Saturday!
