Flash #22 2005
Nicole is off enjoying herself somewhere sunnier (and certainly
drier) this week, so I get to write the news for a change. And what
a week for news it is!
Discovery Bay Asian Open Regatta 2005
We’re very pleased to announce that Hong Kong Resorts International
will be the title sponsors for our regatta this year. HKRI created
Discovery Bay 21 years ago and continue to run and develop the community.
Their support for our regatta is particularly appreciated as they
play such an important part in DB life.
We also welcome the support of Lloyds TSB, specialists in offshore
banking.
Full details of the event will be appearing in Fragrant Harbour
Magazine and on our web site in due course. For now, just block
off the following dates in your diary :
Thurs 20 Oct – Pre-regatta party in Lan Kwai Fong
Fri 21 Oct – Hangover, early night
Sat 22 Oct – Regatta day 1, beach party in Discovery Bay
Sun 23 Oct – Regatta day 2, prize giving & dinner, Discovery
Bay
Last Weekend
Jimmy Shum held another training session on the beach, this time
aimed at building the confidence and abilities of some of our less
frequent sailors. A lot of knowledge was transferred, so I hope
we see a few new faces rigging up over the summer!
Next Weekend
The calendar says we have a single-handed race Sunday
26th. . The weather forecast looks like it might be a bit
strong for that, so we’ll relax it to a one day series for
single and double-handed racing. Skippers briefing at 11:00am.
All those people who have been put on this mailing list after asking
how they get involved in the club, this is your chance to start!
You should get down to the beach about 10:30 and start offering
your help. I’m sure there will be some sailors who need crew
and are glad to give you a go.
Calendars
The Calendar for the second half of the year is ready and will
get posted out as soon as Nicole gets back, unpacks her suitcase,
does her washing, empties her mailbox, waters her plants etc. The
dates and events are up on the web site though, so you can start
copying them in to your household planners straight away. The printed
version will go out to all full and social members, and the mailing
list we will use is the same as for Fragrant Harbour magazine. If
you think you are entitled to the magazine, but don’t get
it for some reason, this would be a great time to tell Nicole :
secretary@lantauboatclub.com.
Open Day
The first event on the new calendar is a club Open Day. The idea
is to get as many people along as possible, members, non-members,
families, everyone, for a fun day on the beach. We’ll fire
up the barbie, crank up the stereo and make a day of it. If you
haven’t been down for a while, that’s the day to do
it. If it’s your family time preventing you sailing more often,
time to bring them along!
I hope we can get a lot of boats on the water and give rides to
any interested future-members who come around. That’s the
way most of us started with the club, so time to pass on the fun
and give a little bit back.
If your boat is for sale, this is a great opportunity to rig it
up and show it off. It isn’t going to sell itself sitting
under a cover, so come down and show what a good deal it is.
We will have the tools available for you to do the necessary to
mosquito-proof your boat – drill holes in the cover and the
tyres to prevent water gathering. This MUST be done! The mosquito
magnet and all the spraying in the world isn’t going to fix
the problem if we are giving the insects perfect breeding grounds.
Novice Training
We will have another training session for absolute beginners on
17th July. I’m sure this will
be popular, as we often get requests for it. The application form
and details are on the web site here.
That’s it, just get out there and enjoy the wind. It’s
been brilliant the last couple of weeks (between the storms) so
make the best of it whilst it lasts
