Beginners training
The training of Sunday was a success. We would like to thank all
members who allowed us to use their boat during the day.
Fifteen new and existing members have been trained the ins and
outs of cat sailing and are ready to join us for our races. Some
of them already own a boat; others are looking for one to buy. So
if you were thinking about it, this might be the right time for
you to sell your boat!
Typhoon procedures
If it is not today, a typhoon might hit us tomorrow, and the question
is: are you prepared?
For us there are three main dangers from typhoons :
1) high winds can either rip off the covers or even lift boats
and throw them around and in to each other. There are tales within
the club of a hobie being blown over the club house before now.
2) Heavy rain can soften the ground around the trees, which then
fall down on to the boats : we lost several hulls last year through
this
3) There is often a tidal surge after a typhoon and the sea can
easily reach the front row of boats and float them away
It is therefore essential that when a typhoon is coming your boat
is tied down to the ground, and the cover is flattened. If there
are no tie downs next to anyone’s boat we have a shovel an
new rope available!.
If it is a big typhoon we need to move the boats off the beach
to the grass areas of Seahorse Lane, near the management centre.
Many hands make light work for that!
Each of us bears the responsibility for deciding whether it is
worth moving our boat, and then doing it. You may get a call telling
you that it is definitely worth it, but you will not be told categorically
that there is no need: nobody wants, or should have to take, the
responsibility of saying it is safe in case it turns out not to
be.
Insurance
The current typhoon might not come to much, but it is timely to
remind you of a few typhoon details. Once the typhoon 3 signal goes
up your sailing insurance stops, so if you are out at that time
you should return to the beach. Remember that there is often a large
difference between the local conditions and those that the meteorologists
see out of the Observatory window, but if it comes down to an insurance
claim it is the official signal level that will decide whether you
are insured or not.
Also remember that conditions can change very rapidly and that
what looks like an exciting sailing day can quickly get out of hand,
so play safe!
