LBC Committee Meeting, 1 June 2006

Review of Sunshine Island

  • Event rained out, but BBQ on beach using new BBQ donated by Mike Chan and Cathy Lam
  • Original event plan for people to bring their own meat, while salads and drinks to be provided by Club and small fee charged

Review of Dragon Boat

  • LBC sailing and outrigger teams did well
  • Big thanks to Marianne Kolding for her help in organizing; Links relocation for t-shirts; and the massage therapist
  • Money donated for massage went towards Medecins sans Frontiere
  • Process requiring a practice beforehand worked as we had enough people to paddle, but no one disappointed

Buddha Series 4,5,6 -race configuration

  • Discussion about how to combine the race series with the objective to get boats to Tai Tam for commodore's cup and then back the following weekend
  • Decision to race to Lamma divided into 2 legs - 1st Disney to Kau Yi Chau; 2nd Kau Yi Chau to Lamma

Commodore's Cup

  • All entries to be rec'd by June 5th
  • Anyone not sailing on Sunday will be offered a tow early on Saturday morning

Facilities

  • Steve and Richard met with Ken W about tree cutting;
  • According to HKR we are an illegal structure despite our land title, electrics, and water;
  • If we can make things happen without getting Lands Dept attention, we can do whatever we like, but once we draw attention we are at risk
  • Weels are suggesting we use existing concrete slabs, move the red hut to be a dedicated sail storage, throw away blue hut. Then we buy an additional new storage container to take full space. Add simple shower facility.
  • Next step: pour concrete slab near canoe racks; committee approved Weels to move better (red or blue) hut to that new area; new hut will be sourced and price approved before we move to next step; Peter volunteered to help.

Old Boats/Beach Clean-up

  • Quote of $3000 to throw away hulls and other things in the pile by end of June
  • Waves are ruined -- Duncan asked for a quote on dumping the boat, Marcus unclear his plan; will offer them a price to see if they will make it happen. Post mtg update: Marcus says boats can and will be fixed. No plan to throw the boats away.
  • Hoses are back and fixed to taps.
  • Need a new gardener; will ask them to empty water off boats-- or add olive oil to reduce mosiquito problem

Trophies

  • We can recycle a trophy and turn it into the Lloyds TSB Cup
  • We can use Uncle Russ to hold our trophies for LBC

Regatta

  • HKR meeting: will rely on their publicity dept this time as their links to the press are good; sticker test is in process; need photos ahead of time so will arrange an early photo shoot for publicity shoot
  • Do we want a helicopter? HKR would pay. Need to determine if we have a area where we can sail that is available to helicopter flights. Steve to call helicopter company.
  • Sponsor update: HKR, Lloyds, Links; Anne will be checking with some others; Igor's price to be offered.
  • Kit: Joe is considering swapping a kit bag for a dry bag.

Christmas Party

  • Need to clarify with HKHC how we will manage the party, whether it will be a joint event
  • One option is to do the party on the beach, very casual, tiki torches
  • DB venues include: Sienna, DBMC, the beach, DBMC headland
  • Anne to check with DBMC about headland as a party location

Outrigger issues

  • Wanr to build a canoe barge out of the old hulls so they can carry a few canoes out sea
  • Have taken over the Dragon Boat- want to move it out of the way for the off-season to reduce the costs for the longer term

  • Canoe club joining fees: the outriggers are willing to accept these and see the advantages of being part of the club

Ah Wah's Boat Stolen

  • Total cost to LBC approximately $20K
  • Taken from mooring where it was chained in Peng Chau
  • Ah Wah has purchased another engine for $30K
  • Steve to talk to insurance company about covering the boat going forward
  • As a condition of replacing our share the boat, we will require Ah Wah to get the boat insured for theft
  • Outriggers need some additional functions
  • We have agreed to replace our existing share of the safety boat up to $15K, or 50% whichever is less; we will also replace the ladder and bolt cutter
  • Richard will speak to Ah Wah; Joe will translate what Richard really meant
