After three years as Commodore and an earlier one as secretary it’s time
for me to stand aside and let someone else have a turn. It’s been a lot of fun and very fulfilling. Also stepping down will be club secretary Michele Felder and treasurer Steve Wallace, both of whom have done a sterling job over the last couple of years.
A previous commodore, Iain Macleod, had a theory that the club was alternately run by the head or the heart. The last few years have definitely been head-dominated as the club has gone through some very positive organizational transitions. Last year we replaced the 20 year old club huts with a smart new building, thanks largely to beachmasters Wayne Smal and Neels Brink who completed the tricky project on time and within the expected costs.
The regatta has grown in size and sophistication over the last 4 years with a quadrupling of budget : the heavy involvement of corporate sponsors has transformed this event from a big drain on the club’s funds to a self-sustaining event. The feedback from the latest sponsors has been very favourable and we are sure to see them back next year.
The growing popularity of paddling in the club, especially in outrigger canoes, presents some challenges in integrating differing priorities. That’s an on-going evolution for the club, but one that I am sure will make the best use of the facilities available for all interested parties.
I’m proud to be able to hand over to Tom Nunan a strong club, both financially and in terms of the large number of committed members. I wish them the best of luck and am sure that their passion, heart and head will drive the club forward in new and exciting directions.
I’ll still be sailing at LBC, and look forward to seeing you on the water!
