Annual General Meeting – New Officers Take the Helm
On Friday, November 16th, LBC held its Annual General Meeting. During the meeting we heard a report on the year’s activities from outgoing Commodore Richard Carrey, a summary of our financial position from outgoing Treasurer Steve Wallace, proposals to address a couple of our challenging issues on the beach, and finally the election of new officers for 2008.
Welcome to the new officers:
Commodore : Tom Nunan
Rear Commodore: Richard Carrey
Treasurer : John Rempel
Secretary : Simon Ludlow & Erin Bowland
Vice Commodore Regatta : Steve Wallace
Vice Commodore Training : Al Doherty & Sydney Leung
Race Officers : Jimmy Shum & Jimmy Leung
Beach Masters : Neels Brink/Piers/Ross Milne
Social Secretary : Philippe Moriau
Paddling Representative : Amey Joost & Kobi Janssen
Thanks to the outgoing officers: Richard, Steve, Michele, Joe, Wayne, and Vanetta, who put a lot of time and energy into keeping the club running at a high standard throughout the year. We had many great events and the biggest regatta ever.
Several key proposals were passed by the committee and affect members. We will send these out in a separate mailing to members only.
Loro Piana Round the Island Race Results
LBC saw a record number of participants in this year’s Round the Island Race, sponsored by Loro Piana and organized by the Royal HK Yacht Club. A total of 19 LBC boats raced including: 9 Darts, 7 Hobie 16s, 2 Hobie Tigers, and 1 Nacra F18.
Coming off a week of strong winds and a fast sail on Saturday to bring the boats across, expectations ran high for a fast race on Sunday. Unfortunatetly, however, the wind gods had other ideas. Almost no wind in the harbour made for some very slow starts and a long exit out the eastern side. Once past Lei Yue Mun, though, the swell and the wind picked up significantly and made for some exciting downwind sailing around the Eastern side of the island. Quite a few boats with spinnakers managed to capsize, but even those without found the conditions very challenging until we got closer to Stanley Bay. From then on, winds were reasonable, but not very strong, requiring extraordinary attention to find the pockets and gain advantage. Relative positions in the race changed hands a lot among the beach cats at Aberdeen, Cyberport, Green Island, and into the Harbour where winds dropped again to almost nothing. A bit of confusion with the race committee allowed all the Tigers and a few of the Darts and Hobie 16s to continue toward the Causeway Bay finish line, while others were given a shortened course at Cyberport. The leading 2 Hobie 16s and 1 Dart 18 battled all the way to a very close finish in Causeway Bay. The low winds in the Harbour again made for some interesting and luck-filled finishes as some boats found the wind at the right time and pulled ahead of their close competition. The sail home, from Green Island to Discovery Bay, was, for many of us, the highlight of the day. Strong winds on the West side of HK island and minimal swell made it possible to sail back in under 45 minutes! In summary, a great day with conditions to suit everyone at some point on the course.
