Flash- 25 Feb

What has been happening lately?

Not too much.  The two frostbite racing events were cancelled – due to cold weather!  The Junk trip to watch the lunar new-year fireworks was very popular (the junk was completely full) and it has been suggested that his should be an annual event. So even more events are coming up soon. Read on!

New and Resheduled events:

The novice training scheduled for this weekend had been rescheduled for March 9th.  If we can’t get the regular members sailing in the cold, there’s not much hope for newcomers!  The pro-am racing, where the novices will get a chance to race with an experienced helm has also been postponed, the date to be announced.  If you or any friends want to sign up for the training, contact the Vice Commodore Training .

The Paddlers/Sailing competition postponed on the 1st Jan will now be held on the26th April. Meet on the beach at 10am

The Enzo Jewellery cup challenge which was to be held on the last day of the Asian Open regatta but was cancelled due to a lack of wind will now be held on March 16th.  The race will be a ‘round the islands’ format.  Meat on the beach at 11am.  This event will be in addition to the ‘Mouse Series’ racing held on this date.

Boat covers:

Based on detailed discussions with the manufacturers of various boat covers, we have discovered the all the best covers are being made from a Sunbrella material. The material is remarkably durable, comes in different colours, and keeps the sun off your boat. We have learned through experience though, that it is also water resistant when first purchased! The water resistance wears off after the first 1-2 years, leaving them able to drain water as we had hoped for our boat covers. Because of this, we will amend our boat cover policy.

Members who purchase a boat cover after 25 February 2008 MUST purchase an LBC approved cover. To make things easy, we will place the order with the provider directly, as we are sourcing the materials and labour separately in order to get the best deal. Approximate cost of a Dart 18 cover with all labour is HK$2600. Price will vary with the size of the cover as more material is required. Enquiries can be sent to the Beachmaster

Membership Fees:

There are still some fees yet to be paid.  Remember, if your fees have not been paid by March 31st, you will have to re-join the club and pay a new joining fee if you still wish to be a member and keep your boat on the beach.  Also, you are reminded that if you haven’t paid, you are not insured.

Fragrant Harbour:

The details of club members entitled to free copies of the magazine is currently being updated.  If you think you should be getting a copy and aren’t please let the secretary know.

Security:

Unfortunately, we have had another break in.  Not much was taken and there was no damage to the club premises.  However, you will notice that we have now permanently sealed the windows, installed an automatic light and a camera.  Please be vigilant, do not give the door code to non club members and make sure you secure the premises when leaving.

Cheung Chau Challenge:

The annual friendly competition with the Hong Kong Hobie Club will be held on the 12th and 13th of April.  This year, however, it will be a different format with two teams being selected from both clubs.  So you will be racing both with and against the HKHC!  The Race Notice will be posted soon on the club website. Accommodation for the weekend is going to be in the Warwick hotel again, and on a first come first serve basis.  If you need accommodation, please let Social Secretary know.

The Racing rules of sailing (Part 2):

Following on from the basic definitions in Part 1, we will now look at two of the most frequently used rules during a race.  These rules fall into the “Right of Way” category.  At times, these rules may be affected by other rules concerning overtaking and mark rounding, but we will look at those later.  The rules apply to a boat that is racing and is defined as the time period from the raising of the preparatory signal until the boat has either cleared the finishing line or retired from the race.
