Typhoon Damage

Typhoon Hagupit has caused extensive damage on the beach.

Yesterday evening, a team of about 15 people moved unsecured boats and checked the tie downs of the remaining boats.  About a dozen more vulnerable boats were moved into Seabird lane.

The typhoon passed Hong Kong about 150km to the south at about 11.30pm last night.  The expected tide surge happened and was worse than anyone expected.  As a result, all the boats in the front two rows except one broke their tie downs and were washed into other boats.  As a result, a number have been damaged, some badly.  In addition, a lot of covers have been ripped and sails and other equipment scattered.

An emergency clear up party put the boats back into position this morning, but a lot of clearing up needs to be done.  DB resorts will clear the considerable amount of debris left over from the storm over the next two days.  But members must get down to the beach to check their boats as soon as possible and secure their equipment. Some member’s kit is mixed up with the debris, so if it’s not collected before the DB resorts cleanup, it may be lost.

Also, a cleanup will take place this weekend.  We need as many members as possible to turn up on Saturday and Sunday to help. We will be taking inventory of the damage so we can help coordinate member repair jobs.

And many thanks to the volunteers who helped over the last two days. We have also taken a number of photos and videos to document the damage.
