Typhoon Koppu
We had a bit of a lucky escape with this one. Although not the strongest of storms, we realised at the last minute that it would create a tide surge much like the devastating Typhoon Hagupit last year. The Club does have a Typhoon watch system in place, and in this case it worked - albeit with quite a late warning. Many thanks are due to all those Club members who turned up on the beach at short notice to move boats. In the end, the tide reached 3.2 metres which was .9 metres higher than predicted and the water just reached the first row of the boats which had already been moved up the beach! We had a narrow escape on this one indeed. See the photos here.
This should serve as a wake up call to all those boat owners who pay their dues and promptly ignore their responsibilities to look after their boats. We are not the kind of Club that can continue to rely on the volunteer efforts of a few members to look after all the boats! Special thanks tothe 6 people who took it upon themselves to move ALL of the boats back into place the day after the typhoon (Joe Shieh, Cho, Ting, Martin, James Branch, Andrew). Hope I didn't miss anyone. Boats that are continually left in place during these situations jeopardise the safety of the boats around them and require the Club and its active members to look after them. Boats that continue to be ignored in this way will be removed from the Club.
Beach Cleanup
There's a planned cleanup of Tai Pak beach on Sunday 4th October after the Mid-Autumn festival celebrations between 09:00 - 13:00. Meet on Tai Pak Beach (under the trees, on the Water Margin side). Bring sun block, a hat, a water bottle, lots of energy and enthusiasm! All kids will receive a free beach cleanup crew T-shirt for helping out, and everyone is welcome to enjoy a celebratory post-cleanup barbeque at Hemingways! Gloves and rubbish bags will be provided. Drinking water will be provided for free refills. Please show your support on behalf of the LBC for this worthy cause.
Air Canada Asian Open Regatta
The LBC annual event will be held over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November. The registration will only be done on-line, so keep watching the club website for details. And want to do well? Then book for the Regatta Race Training with Brian Phipps the preceding weekend, the 31st of Oct/1st Nov. Details will be available in the next Flash and on the web site.
Hobie Asian Championships 2009
The HKHC regatta is this coming weekend! It's not too late to enter and LBC already have a good showing for the event. Please go to the Hobie Club web site to enter and get details.
Share your boat!
We have a list of new members wanting to bring boats onto the beach but who can't because the Club is up to the limit of 70 boats set by the Discovery Bay Management. It's quite obvious that many of these boats hardly sail and some not at all! The Club's stated aim is to "Promote non-powered water sports" which means that the LBC should not be viewed as a boat storage facility. The LBC Committee does have the power remove boats which do not sail, and we will be identifying them and contacting the owners in due course so that we can make room for boats which will be sailed. But if you're one of the Club members which do not sail you boat, why not consider selling a share in your boat (or even the whole boat) to a new keen member? You can use the classifieds section of the Club website, or contact secretary@lantauboatclub.com
