Air Canada Asian Open Regatta 2010

LBC Air Canada Asian Open Regatta

Our annual regatta was a great success this year with around 50 entries and good weather. This year we are happy to have a variety of boats entering the race including Dart, Hobie, Tiger, Nacra Infusion and Shadow. Wind was steady blowing at around 15 knots both days. Congratulations to Choi and Joe, our Commodore, on winning the overall prize with 6 1st place out of 8 races. This year we have Hamish and Craig, an excellent pair of sailors who haven’t raced for quite a while, competing in the Tiger fleet. But Choi and Joe still performed admirably with consistency and tactics matched with their boat speed.  Other Tiger sailors did not have much of a chance against them. As for Hobie 16 fleet, we have Chris Steilberg and Ting as the winner. Skippering for the last 2 years, Ting had her first trial as a crew and worked quite well with Chris as a team. Finally comes Richard and Michele who won in Dart 18 fleet. Richard never has a regular crew and Michele is an very experienced Dart crew. So they paired up as a new team. They did some practice before the regatta and their hard work was recognized as they did so excellent in the races.

As wind was quite heavy, we had a few boats that capsized and some even capsizing for more than one time. Fortunately sailors managed to right up their boats, some on their own and some assisted by safety boats. Last but not the least, we’d like to thank our regatta commodore Stephen Wallace, our race officer Brian Phipps, Kevin Lewis from ABC for preparing and organizing everything and all volunteering helpers for giving so much support to the regatta. Success of the regatta was due to effort spent by them. And well done sailors for completing all races in the 2-day event with such good wind.
