About the Lantau Boat Club

Run entirely on a voluntary basis, the club has space for some 70 boats, with secure storage for sails. Catamarans are currently in vogue, and the club has some 36 Dart 18’s as the most popular class, backed up by 9 Dart15’s and assorted Hobies (14’s,16’s,17’s,18 & 20) and 2 Hurricane 5.9’s. Various dinghies make up the numbers. We also have many social members who join us for our races.

Kayaks and canoes, particularly outrigger canoes, are becoming more popular, and we have a thriving paddling section which runs regular events and training sessions.

Club Sailing/racing takes place every other Sunday in the waters surrounding Lantau island, and usually follows the format of three races back to back. This is supplemented by social sails and cruises where family members usually come along by junk, and all meet up for a meal in a friendly local restaurant. The emphasis is on keeping it a very social club.

Key club events in the year include:

  • a weekend regatta in March at Cheung Chau with the Tai Tam Hobie Club
  • LBC’s annual “Open Day” in June
  • beginners and advanced sail training at the end of September with the internationally known sail coach and author Brian Phipps (UK National Youth Squad Coach)
  • Culminating in the LBC Annual Regatta in mid October, when teams arrive from other Hong Kong based clubs to do battle on the water over a weekend of racing and non-stop partying.

New members are always welcome, regardless of whether they are experienced sailors or not. The best way to learn to sail is to “turn up and crew”. Most race days sees there being a shortage of crews available, and this is the best introduction you can get. We now have eight trained instructors who are involved in running training programmes throughout the year.

The Club also publishes 2 pages every month in 'Fragrant Harbour', South East Asia's premiere sailing magazine. Read more about us there. A copy of Fragrant Harbour is sent free to all members.
