Lantau Island Outrigger Canoe Club (LIOCC) is the paddling division of the Lantau Boat Club. LIOCC was formed in March 2005 and has about 50 members, mostly residents of Discovery Bay.
LIOCC has four OC6s (six-person canoes). Two are old Malia-type canoes, Mahoa (Hawaiian for "traveling in the company of canoes and paddlers") and Mahoe ("Twins" or "Sisters"). At the end of 2008, we bought two new Bradley Lightning outriggers (Va'a Pake Nui, which means "Strong Chinese Boat," and Va'a Pake Awiwi, which means "Fast Chinese Boat"). The club also owns one OC2.
For more information about LIOCC, visit the LIOCC website or write to liocc@gmail.com.
Training Info
LIOCC runs regular training sessions every Saturday from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. We meet at the canoes on the beach.
For those who are keen, there is often Sunday morning paddling and also mid-week paddling, which is usually held 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. so that people can get to work.
Experienced members are welcome to organise their own training sessions at any time in an OC-6 or OC-2.
For further information on membership and training, contact Kobi Janssen (kobi at netvigator dot com).
Dragon Boating
Each year, LIOCC paddlers participate in dragon boat races around Hong Kong, including Deep Water Bay, Lamma, and Mui Wo. We always organize teams to paddle at Discovery Bay for the Tuen Ng fetival.
Lantau Classic
Each year, the LIOCC sponsors the Lantau Classic, an OC6 race day in Discovery Bay attended by paddling clubs from all over Hong Kong. The Lantau Classic is usually scheduled for the first week in October.
