Scorcher Series II

Six boats faced tricky wind shifts, a strong current, and squally gusts in the second leg of our Scorcher Series on July 27, making for a challenging and exciting morning on the water.

The weather gods smiled on the fleet, giving us just enough of a gap in the week’s squalls and thunderstorms to get three races in before the next storm hit.

A variable BF 3-4 wind was blowing from south-southeast, so Awah set a sausage course between Peng Chau and Lantau with the upwind mark aligned roughly with the gap between Sunshine Island and Hei Ling Chau. The wind funneled through the gap and shot across the two sides of the course, with less wind in the middle of the bottom half. A strong current streaming around Peng Chau toward the DB marina added a challenge to the starts and on the final tack to the windward mark.

Chris Fraser and Joe Shieh got off to a quick start in the first race and built a commanding lead on the first beat. The excitement lay in the race between Branco Ng and Henry Kwok on their Dart 18 and Phoebe and Benny Chan on a Hobie 16. Branco and Henry pulled out a victory by just 21 seconds.

The wind built for the second race and all boats got around the course much faster. Chris and Joe zipped through two laps in under 18 minutes despite slowing down to clear a badly snagged spinnaker sheet. This time the Hobie/Dart rivalry went the other way, with Phoebe and Benny turning in an impressive 24:50 to beat Branco and Henry by two minutes. Finn Steen and first-time crew Tom earned the “most improved” award for race 2, beating their race 1 time by more than six minutes.

Shortly after the start of race 3, a squall blew in to the west over Mui Wo, the wind jumped to about 17 knots, and the waves got very choppy. Rounding the top mark was exhilirating. Halfway down the second lap the wind shifted wildly, so that the F18 teams had to drop their spinnaker and sail on a reach to cross the finish line. Steve Devlin and new crew Mark—another first-timer—reacted an eyeblink too late and ended up on their side, drifting rapidly toward the marina breakwater. Meanwhile, Phoebe and Benny flipped on the difficult last tack. Branco and Henry finished uneventfully, with William Fung and Jimmy Leung two minutes behind them.

Sailors had just enough time back on the beach to derig and clean up before another violent squall hit, drenching boats and the clubhouse patio with rain. A bit of weather wasn’t enough to cast a cloud over our post-race bbq, though, deliciously catered by chef Steve Devlin with fresh supplies flown in from Alaska.

Complete results are below. The next leg of the Scorcher Series is August 10.
