LBC rowers strike gold in Japan

Marianne Kolding and Grace Ingal Bolger returned from the May 2nd Toda International Masters Regatta in Japan with gold medals in the Women’s Double Sculls ‘B’ category and, in partnership with two RHKYC rowers, in the Mixed Coxed Quad.

Built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the Toda rowing basin is well known to RHKYC crews, but this was the first time LBC rowers competed there.  Entries were mainly from Japan, plus a few crews from China. Masters age categories run in 7 year bands from age 27 and the oldest crew was a Japanese men’s eight with an average age over 80.

Race day morning saw perfect conditions, 23 degrees, calm and blue sky. The double scull race was over 1,000 meters and the LBC crew got away quickly and led from start to finish thanks to all the training at Sha Tin.

The quad race, with Geoff and Bryan from RHKYC, was in the afternoon, and ended with another win.

Apart from the rowing, the crew enjoyed their visit to Japan and vowed to return next year and bring more LBC members.
