Tai Wan To Beach, Lamma Island – Sunday October 30th, 2016
Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club played host to the 24km race around their home island last month. Teams from all over Hong Kong competed in the different categories of OC6, OC1 and Surf Skis.
LBC fielded three OC6 teams – one men’s and two mixed – and two OC1 paddlers on a warm day which returned some great results.
The OC1 race set off first, with Trisna and Kevin representing LBC. The men set off 10 minutes later in the OC6 standard category, and things rapidly deteriorated. A light rigging of the canoe meant the boat was very ‘tippy’ and difficult to control. The first corner around the power station saw LBC men almost go over, but miraculously the boat stayed up right. The next few kilometres were difficult, as one or two of paddlers were forced to stop paddling and keep the boat upright. Eventually, steersperson Peter forfeited the race and called for the paddling to halt. The canoe was picked up by the support boat and towed back to the beach. An afternoon to forget for LBC men.
However, the OC1 paddlers continued their way around Lamma in gruelling conditions. Kevin completed the route in second place in a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and Trisna finished in 3 hours and 30 mins. A lonely slog around Hong Kong’s third largest island – a fantastic achievement.
The two LBC mixed teams were up next in the second race of the day, together with the women’s category. Both teams made terrific starts and powered away from the beach and right around the unsightly power station that dominates the west of the island. Conditions were better on the north side through the Lamma Channel but deteriorated again around to the east of the island. Both teams were tested through the swells as they rounded the south and towards the finish line. First and second place went to LBC, with VRC in third. The winning time was 2 hours and 21 minutes.
A fantastic end to the day with both LBC mixed teams coming away with silverware.
The outrigger season culminates in mid- November with the annual Dragon Run and the Around Hong Kong Island Races in which LBC paddlers will feature.
