Masters Regatta Middle Island – 10 Dec 2016
LBC rowers were at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Middle Island Masters Regatta on 10th December. In previous years this regatta was confined to Yacht Club rowers, but its opening up to other clubs was a welcome expansion of the rowing calendar.
Sixteen knockout events and time trials were offered for rowers aged 27 to 41 and aged 42 and older over distances from 500m to 2400m and in various boat classes. Rowing in a mixed double over a 500m course with RHKYC’s Mark Welles, LBC’s Marianne Kolding held off fellow LBC rower Grace Bolger who was partnering Ng Kong Wan, the current RHKYC Rowing Captain.
In the 2400m coastal doubles time trials round Middle Island Marianne and LBC’s Kirsty Moran and RHKYC’s Cally Williams and Tils Ferrara placed equal second in the women’s event only 14 seconds behind RHKYC’s Natalie Kwan and Soraya Nidal. Six crews battled it out in the mixed crews event, with LBC’s Estelle Davies and Bernard Chow clinching first place in 14:42, followed by Grace Bolger and Sarit Wijeyekoon in fifth place in 15:45 and Marina Ros and Allan Bell in sixth place in 16:53.
As expected, other events went to RHKYC crews. All in all this was a good day’s racing, a welcome addition to the calendar and a regatta that can only get bigger in the future.
